Interstate 87 (North Carolina)

Interstate 87 (I-87) is a north-south Interstate Highway located entirely within the state of North Carolina. It forms a primary corridor connecting Raleigh, the state capital, with the Hampton Roads region of Virginia and ultimately, the larger Interstate network to the north.

Route Description:

I-87 largely follows existing U.S. Route 64 (US 64) and US 17 corridors. It begins in Raleigh at its junction with I-440 and I-540. From Raleigh, it travels generally eastward, eventually merging with US 64 near Wendell. The route continues east, passing through or near towns such as Zebulon, Rocky Mount, and Williamston.

Near Williamston, I-87 splits from US 64 and begins to run concurrently with US 17 north towards the Virginia state line. It provides access to Elizabeth City before crossing into Virginia, where it continues as Interstate 64.

History:

I-87 was officially designated in 2016 as part of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. Prior to the designation, the route was a combination of existing US highways undergoing upgrades to Interstate standards. The designation aimed to improve connectivity and economic development in eastern North Carolina. Construction and upgrades to bring the route up to full Interstate standards are ongoing in some sections. The route is expected to spur economic growth by providing better access to markets and tourism destinations.

Future:

Continued improvements and upgrades are planned for I-87 to further enhance its capacity and safety. These projects aim to address bottlenecks, improve interchanges, and bring all sections of the route up to full Interstate Highway standards. Completion of these upgrades is crucial for realizing the full potential of I-87 as a major transportation corridor.
