INS Vagir (S41)

INS Vagir (S41) is an Indian Navy Kalvari-class diesel-electric attack submarine. It is the fifth of six submarines of the class being built in India by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in collaboration with Naval Group of France. The submarine is based on the Scorpène design.

Vagir was launched in November 2020 and commissioned into the Indian Navy in January 2023. The submarine is designed for a variety of missions, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and area denial. It is equipped with advanced sensors, including a sonar suite and a combat management system. Vagir is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles. It is designed to operate in all maritime theatres, and represents a significant boost to India's underwater capabilities. The submarine is named after the Sand Shark, a predatory deep-sea marine animal of the Indian Ocean. The original INS Vagir was a Vela-class submarine that served the Indian Navy from 1973 to 2001.
