Diamond Lake (Oregon)
Diamond Lake is a natural lake located in Douglas County, Oregon, in the United States. Situated in the Cascade Mountains, within the Umpqua National Forest, it is approximately 80 miles northeast of Roseburg and 6 miles north of Crater Lake National Park. The lake is known for its clear, cold water and stunning views of Mount Bailey and Mount Thielsen, which are often reflected in its surface.
Diamond Lake is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. During the summer months, visitors enjoy activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and camping. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, making it a favorite spot for anglers. Several campgrounds and resorts are located along the lake's shoreline, providing accommodation and amenities for visitors.
In the past, Diamond Lake faced significant challenges due to invasive species, primarily the tui chub. Efforts were undertaken to eradicate the tui chub population, which had negatively impacted the lake's ecosystem and the native trout population. These efforts included chemical treatments to eliminate the chub and subsequent restocking of the lake with trout. These treatments were successful in restoring the lake's ecosystem.
The lake's name originates from the reflections seen on its surface. The name "Diamond" was inspired by the way the sunlight sparkles on the lake's surface, creating the appearance of countless tiny diamonds.
