John Bost

John Bost (1817-1881) was a Swiss Protestant pastor and philanthropist. He is best known for founding a network of institutions in La Forge, near La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland, dedicated to the care and education of individuals with disabilities, particularly those with mental disabilities, epilepsy, and physical impairments.

Born in Geneva, Bost initially pursued a career in commerce before experiencing a profound religious conversion. He subsequently studied theology and became a pastor in the Free Church of Geneva. His pastoral work led him to recognize the significant unmet needs of vulnerable populations, inspiring him to establish the Institution Evangélique de La Forge in 1848.

La Forge began as a small home for children with disabilities and gradually expanded to encompass a diverse range of institutions, including schools, workshops, and homes for adults. Bost's approach was rooted in his Christian faith and a belief in the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, regardless of their disabilities. He emphasized a loving and supportive environment, focusing on education, vocational training, and spiritual development.

Bost's work was pioneering for its time and had a significant influence on the development of disability care and advocacy throughout Europe and beyond. His institutions continue to operate today, bearing witness to his legacy of compassion and commitment to serving those most in need. He also authored numerous religious works, including hymns and theological essays. His work emphasized practical Christianity and the importance of living out one's faith through service to others.
