Hugh O'Donnell (priest)
Hugh O'Donnell (died 1691) was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and soldier. He was a member of the prominent O'Donnell clan of County Donegal.
O'Donnell was ordained a priest sometime before the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. He played a role in supporting the Royalist cause during the Interregnum. Following the Restoration of the monarchy, he was appointed parish priest of Kilmacrenan in County Donegal.
During the Williamite War in Ireland, O'Donnell served as a chaplain to the Jacobite army. He is also reported to have raised and commanded a company of soldiers, reflecting the tradition of Gaelic clergy participating in military actions. He was killed at the Battle of Aughrim in July 1691 while fighting for the Jacobite cause. His death occurred during the final stages of the battle, as the Jacobite army was being routed. He is remembered as a patriotic figure within some Irish nationalist circles due to his commitment to his faith and his involvement in resisting English rule.
