Hongdo
Hongdo (홍도, 紅島) is a small island located off the southwestern coast of South Korea, in the Dadohaehaesang National Park, Sinan County, Jeollanam-do Province. The name "Hongdo" translates to "Red Island," derived from the reddish-brown hue of its rocks and cliffs, especially visible during sunset.
Hongdo is known for its dramatic coastal scenery, featuring unusual rock formations, sea caves, and sheer cliffs. It is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors who come to admire its natural beauty via boat tours that circumnavigate the island. Due to conservation efforts, access to the interior of Hongdo is restricted to protect its unique flora and fauna.
The island has a small resident population, primarily engaged in fishing and tourism-related activities. Limited accommodation and dining options are available to cater to visitors. The island is accessible by ferry from Mokpo and other coastal cities.
Hongdo is recognized as a Scenic Site (명승) by the South Korean government, further emphasizing its importance as a place of outstanding natural beauty. The preservation of its unique ecosystem and geological features is a key priority for local authorities.
