Holzminden (district)
Holzminden is a district (German: Landkreis) in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the districts of Hamelin-Pyrmont, Hildesheim, Northeim, Höxter (North Rhine-Westphalia), and Lippe (North Rhine-Westphalia).
Geography
The district is located in the Weserbergland, a hilly region alongside the Weser River. The Weser flows through the district from south to north. The Solling hills, a wooded range, occupy the eastern part of the district.
History
The district was established in 1833 as part of the Duchy of Brunswick. After World War II, Brunswick merged into the newly formed state of Lower Saxony.
Coat of Arms
The coat of arms displays a white horse of Saxony, representing the historical affiliation to the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The crossed keys are the symbol of Saint Peter, the patron saint of Höxter, representing the historic relationship to the County of Höxter.
