Hlemmur
Hlemmur was Reykjavík's main bus terminal from 1979 until 2018. Located in downtown Reykjavík, Iceland, it served as a central hub for Strætó bs., the city's public bus system, connecting various routes within the capital area.
Prior to becoming a bus terminal, the area was known for its market hall, also named Hlemmur, which operated for several decades. The market hall was a popular destination for locals seeking fresh produce, meat, and other goods. When the market hall was demolished, the bus terminal was constructed in its place.
The Hlemmur bus terminal was a significant landmark in Reykjavík for many years. It facilitated public transportation for residents and tourists alike. However, the bus terminal was criticized for its outdated facilities and lack of amenities.
In 2018, the Hlemmur bus terminal was closed and replaced by a new, more modern terminal at BSÍ (Reykjavík Terminal). The building that housed the former Hlemmur terminal was then renovated into a food hall, retaining the name Hlemmur Mathöll. The Hlemmur Mathöll features a variety of food vendors offering diverse culinary options. The area continues to be a transportation hub, with bus stops located nearby, although the primary terminal function has shifted.
