Degenia
Degenia is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae), also known as the mustard or cabbage family. The genus is monotypic, meaning it contains only one species.
Degenia velebitica (Velebit Degenia)
The sole species within the genus is Degenia velebitica, commonly known as Velebit Degenia. This plant is endemic to the Velebit mountain range in Croatia, specifically found in the northern and central parts. Due to its limited distribution and specific habitat requirements, Degenia velebitica is a protected and iconic species.
Characteristics
Degenia velebitica is a perennial plant characterized by its silvery-grey, hairy leaves arranged in a basal rosette. From the center of the rosette emerges a flowering stalk bearing clusters of bright yellow flowers. The plant typically grows to a height of 10-30 centimeters. It thrives in calcareous rocky habitats, particularly on steep cliffs and crevices.
Conservation Status
Due to its restricted range and vulnerability to habitat loss and collection, Degenia velebitica is classified as a protected species. Conservation efforts focus on preserving its natural habitat within the Velebit National Park.
