Henry Compton (MP)
Henry Compton (c. 1632 – 1713) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1660 and 1698.
Compton was the son of Sir Henry Compton of Brambletye House, Sussex, and his wife Mary Browne, daughter of Sir Stephen Browne, Lord Mayor of London. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford.
He was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for East Grinstead in 1660 for the Convention Parliament. He was re-elected MP for East Grinstead in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament and sat until 1679. He was elected MP for Sussex in 1685 and sat until 1687. He was elected MP for Arundel in 1689 and sat until 1690. He was then elected MP for East Grinstead again in 1690, sitting until 1698.
His parliamentary career was marked by periods of activity and relative quiet. He generally aligned with the Tory faction.
Compton married Philadelphia Wentworth, daughter of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford.
