HNLMS Z 5 (1915)
HNLMS Z 5 was a Dutch torpedo boat of the Z 5 class. Built by Fijenoord of Rotterdam, she was launched in 1915 and commissioned into the Royal Netherlands Navy. During the interwar period, she served in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), primarily on patrol and training duties.
Following the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940, the Z 5 remained in the Dutch East Indies. When Japan began its offensive in the Pacific in December 1941, the Z 5, along with other Dutch naval units, was tasked with defending the region.
In February 1942, the Z 5 was involved in the Battle of the Java Sea. During the battle and subsequent engagements, she participated in torpedo attacks against Japanese convoys and warships. Despite the efforts of the Allied forces, the Japanese forces ultimately prevailed.
HNLMS Z 5 was scuttled by her crew on March 2, 1942, in Surabaya, to prevent her capture by the advancing Japanese forces.
