HMS Nestor (1915)
HMS Nestor was an Admiralty M-class destroyer built for the Royal Navy during World War I. Ordered in November 1914, she was completed in July 1916 and served with the Grand Fleet.
During the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, Nestor, commanded by Commander the Hon. Edward Bingham, formed part of the 13th Destroyer Flotilla. She became engaged with German High Seas Fleet units, including the battlecruiser SMS Seydlitz. Badly damaged by German gunfire, Nestor was crippled and forced to stop.
The following morning, 1 June 1916, Nestor was sunk by gunfire from the German dreadnought SMS Westfalen. Commander Bingham survived and was rescued, later being awarded the Victoria Cross for his courage and leadership during the battle. The wreck of Nestor is a designated war grave.
