Athenree

Athenree is a small settlement located in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand, specifically in the Western Bay of Plenty district. It lies approximately halfway between Katikati and Waihi Beach on State Highway 2.

Athenree is known primarily as a coastal holiday destination, featuring a sheltered harbour and a variety of recreational activities, including boating, fishing, and swimming. The Athenree Hot Springs, a natural hot spring complex, is a significant tourist attraction in the area.

Historically, the land around Athenree was originally occupied by Māori iwi. European settlement began in the late 19th century, and the area developed as a farming and orchard region alongside its burgeoning tourism industry.

The settlement's name is believed to derive from a combination of 'Athen' and 'ree', possibly referring to a geographical feature or a person associated with the early European settlers.

The Athenree area is characterized by its relaxed coastal atmosphere and its proximity to both natural beauty and larger population centers within the Bay of Plenty. The population is relatively small, but it experiences a significant increase during the summer holiday period.
