HMS Goldfinch (1910)
HMS Goldfinch was an Acorn-class torpedo boat destroyer built for the Royal Navy. Constructed by John Brown & Company, Clydebank, she was launched on 24 March 1910 and completed in August 1910. As a torpedo boat destroyer, she was designed to counter the threat of torpedo boats to larger warships, and possessed her own torpedo armament in addition to guns.
As part of the Acorn class, Goldfinch was characterised by its turtleback forecastle and three funnels. These destroyers were slightly larger and more powerful than their predecessors, the Beagle class.
The service history of HMS Goldfinch is relatively scant. She likely served with the Home Fleet or other formations in the pre-war period and during the First World War. Details of specific engagements or deployments are currently limited. By the end of the war, destroyers like Goldfinch were becoming increasingly obsolete in the face of newer, larger and more heavily armed destroyers. Goldfinch was sold for breaking in 1921.
