HMS Clarence (1827)

HMS Clarence was a 84-gun second-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched in 1827.

Design and Construction

The Clarence was designed by Sir Robert Seppings and built at Pembroke Dockyard. She was one of the later developments of the large sailing ships that formed the backbone of the British fleet during the Napoleonic Wars and the subsequent period of peace. These vessels were heavily armed and intended for fleet actions and long-range deployments.

Service History

Upon completion, the Clarence served primarily in the Mediterranean and Channel Fleets. Her duties included patrolling, exercising, and representing British naval power in various ports. While she did not participate in any major battles, she played a crucial role in maintaining British dominance at sea.

Fate

The Clarence was converted to a receiving ship in 1861, serving as a floating accommodation and training facility. She was eventually sold out of the service in 1884 and broken up.
