These fungi are characterized by their club-shaped or cylindrical apothecia (fruiting bodies) that arise from a sclerotium, a hardened mass of fungal mycelium. The sclerotium serves as a survival structure, allowing the fungus to withstand unfavorable conditions.

Species within the Stamnaria genus are typically saprophytic, meaning they obtain nutrients from decaying organic matter. They are commonly found in damp or marshy environments, often associated with decaying plant material such as sedges and rushes. The apothecia are usually small and may be overlooked due to their inconspicuous nature and habitat.

Identifying Stamnaria species often requires microscopic examination of spores and other anatomical features. Differentiation from other genera in the Sclerotiniaceae family, such as Ciboria and Sclerotinia, relies on a combination of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, including the shape and structure of the apothecia and the presence and morphology of the sclerotium.
