HMCS Louisburg (K143)

HMCS Louisburg (K143) was a Flower-class corvette that served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. She primarily saw service in the Battle of the Atlantic as an escort vessel.

Louisburg was ordered on 22 January 1940 as part of the 1939-1940 Flower-class building program. She was laid down on 29 May 1940 by Davie Shipbuilding & Repairing Co. Ltd. in Lauzon, Quebec, and launched on 10 September 1940. She was commissioned into the RCN on 13 June 1941 at Quebec City.

During her service, Louisburg was initially assigned to the Newfoundland Escort Force. She later transferred to the Western Local Escort Force (WLEF) in 1942, and then Mid-Ocean Escort Force (MOEF) group C-1 in 1943. In early 1943, she was refitted at Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

On 6 February 1943, while escorting convoy ON S-166, Louisburg was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-446 southeast of Cape Farewell, Greenland. Eighteen members of her crew were lost. The survivors were rescued by other escort vessels in the convoy.
