Chapman served with the Royal Fusiliers during World War I, an experience that profoundly impacted him and heavily influenced his later writing. His most famous work, A Passionate Prodigality, published in 1933, is a critically acclaimed memoir of his wartime experiences, offering a candid and often harrowing portrayal of trench warfare and its psychological effects on soldiers. It is considered a significant contribution to First World War literature.

After the war, Chapman pursued an academic career, teaching history at various institutions. He held professorships at the University of Leeds and the University of Strasbourg.
