Greg Grant (basketball, born 1966)
Greg Grant (born August 29, 1966) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'3" (1.90 m) point guard, Grant is known for his improbable journey to the NBA, overcoming poverty and academic struggles to achieve his dream.
Grant grew up in Trenton, New Jersey. He attended Trenton High School, but initially struggled academically. He later attended Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania. He started his college basketball career at Mercer County Community College, where he led the nation in scoring in 1986. He then transferred to Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), where he continued to excel.
Grant was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the second round (48th overall) of the 1989 NBA draft. He played seven seasons in the NBA for six different teams: the Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets, Washington Bullets (later Wizards), Denver Nuggets, and Orlando Magic. Known for his hustle, determination, and unusual behind-the-back dribbling style, Grant was a fan favorite wherever he played.
After his NBA career, Grant became a motivational speaker and author. He wrote an autobiography, "The Underdog: From the Streets of Trenton to the NBA," which chronicles his inspiring story. He has also been involved in coaching and mentoring young basketball players. Grant's story is often cited as an example of perseverance and the pursuit of dreams against the odds.
