Giovanni Bonsi (painter)

Giovanni Bonsi (fl. 1351-1371) was an Italian painter active in Florence during the 14th century. He is documented as a member of the Arte dei Medici e Speziali, the guild to which Florentine painters belonged. While few works are definitively attributed to him, he is believed to have been influenced by the style of Andrea Orcagna and Nardo di Cione. Bonsi is primarily known for his panel paintings, including those depicting religious subjects. One of the key pieces associated with Bonsi is a polyptych, now dispersed, that once resided in the church of San Pietro in Florence. Details regarding his life and artistic training remain relatively scarce, hindering a more comprehensive understanding of his artistic development and output. He represents a figure within the generation of Florentine artists navigating the transition between the late Gothic and early Renaissance styles.
