John Aler
John Aler (born September 4, 1943, Baltimore, Maryland – died December 10, 2022, Clermont-Ferrand, France) was an American operatic tenor known for his extensive repertoire and mastery of the bel canto style, particularly the works of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini. He was also admired for his interpretations of French opera and Baroque music.
Aler began his career in the United States, performing with regional opera companies and orchestras. He gained international recognition in the 1980s, performing at leading opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and La Scala.
He was highly regarded for his agility, elegant phrasing, and clear diction. His notable roles included Ernesto in Donizetti's Don Pasquale, Almaviva in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Nadir in Bizet's Les pêcheurs de perles. He also recorded extensively, leaving behind a significant discography of both operatic and concert repertoire. Aler taught voice later in his career, sharing his expertise with aspiring singers.
