Gila (band)

Gila was a German krautrock band active in the early 1970s. They were known for their experimental and psychedelic sound, incorporating elements of progressive rock and jazz.

The band was formed in Stuttgart in 1969 by guitarist Fritz Scheyhing and drummer Daniel Alluno. Shortly after formation, they were joined by keyboardist and vocalist Conny Veit. Their debut album, Gila, released in 1971, showcased their improvisational style and complex compositions. Veit's haunting vocals and the band's use of unconventional instruments contributed to their unique sound.

In 1972, Alluno left the band and was replaced by Harald Winkler. With Winkler, Gila moved in a slightly different direction, exploring heavier and more guitar-oriented sounds. This new style was showcased on their second and final album, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, released in 1973. This album was inspired by Dee Brown's book of the same name, dealing with the history of Native Americans.

Despite critical acclaim, Gila disbanded in 1973. Conny Veit went on to join the band Popol Vuh. Their two albums remain highly regarded in the krautrock scene and are considered influential examples of the genre.
