Stauf Castle (Palatinate)

Stauf Castle is a ruined hilltop castle located near the village of Stauf in the Donnersbergkreis district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Situated on a prominent sandstone rock formation, it commands views over the surrounding Palatinate Forest.

The castle's origins are believed to date back to the 12th century. It was likely constructed by the Counts of Leiningen to secure their territory and control the surrounding trade routes. Historical records mention the castle as being in their possession from the 13th century onwards.

Throughout its history, Stauf Castle experienced numerous changes in ownership and was involved in various conflicts. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was heavily damaged. Although partially rebuilt, it never regained its former importance.

The castle complex comprises various structures, including remnants of the outer walls, the keep, residential buildings, and a gate tower. While much of the castle is now in ruins, sections of the original walls and towers are still standing, providing insight into its former layout and architecture.

Today, Stauf Castle is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in history and the region's rich cultural heritage. The site is freely accessible and offers scenic hiking trails.
