James Stewart Martin (congressman)
James Stewart Martin (1826 – December 18, 1907) was a U.S. Representative from Illinois.
Martin was born near Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky, in 1826. He received a limited schooling and moved to Illinois in 1853. He engaged in agricultural pursuits and was elected supervisor of Richland Township. He served as member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1860 and 1862. He was a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1864.
Martin was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1877 – March 3, 1879). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1878.
After his term in Congress, he resumed agricultural pursuits. Martin died in Salem, Illinois, on December 18, 1907. He was interred in East Lawn Cemetery.
