George Story (priest)

George Story (1664 – November 1721) was an English clergyman who served as Dean of Limerick.

Born in Northumberland, Story was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. He is primarily remembered for his detailed and contemporary account of the Williamite War in Ireland, specifically the events surrounding the Battle of the Boyne and the Siege of Limerick. His "A True and Impartial History of the Most Material Occurrences in the Kingdom of Ireland During the Last Two Years," published in 1691, provides valuable insights into the political, military, and social aspects of the conflict from the perspective of a chaplain serving with the Williamite forces. The book is considered a key primary source for understanding this period of Irish history.

Story served as chaplain to Lord Capell and later to the Earl of Romney. His experiences during the war led to his appointment as Dean of Limerick, a position he held until his death in 1721. His history offers a pro-Williamite viewpoint and, while generally considered factual, should be read critically alongside other sources to gain a balanced understanding of the events he describes.
