George Halford (bishop)
George Halford (1844-1910) was an Anglican bishop in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He served as the second Bishop of Rockhampton in Queensland, Australia, from 1892 until his death in 1910.
Halford was educated at Worcester College, Oxford, and ordained a priest in 1869. Prior to his appointment to Rockhampton, he held various ecclesiastical positions in England, including curate of St. Mary's, Kidderminster, and vicar of St. Peter's, Eaton Square, London.
As Bishop of Rockhampton, Halford oversaw a vast and sparsely populated diocese. He dedicated himself to expanding the Church's presence in the region, focusing on establishing new parishes, building churches and schools, and providing pastoral care to scattered communities. He was known for his energetic leadership, strong organizational skills, and commitment to the welfare of his clergy and laity.
Halford played a key role in promoting religious education and social welfare initiatives within his diocese. He supported the establishment of St. Peter's School, Rockhampton, and worked to improve the living conditions of Indigenous Australians within the region.
