Ninekirks

Ninekirks is a deserted medieval village in Cumbria, England, located in the valley of the River Eamont, near Brougham. Its name is derived from "Nine Kirks," meaning "nine churches" or possibly "the churches of the nine tribes/families." However, the actual etymology remains a subject of some debate among historians.

The visible remains at Ninekirks largely consist of the ruins of Brougham Old Church (also known as Ninekirks Church), dedicated to St. Wilfrid. This church, built in the 12th century, stands on the site of an earlier Roman fort, and possibly an even earlier Christian establishment. The church itself is noted for its fine Norman architecture, particularly its doorway and chancel arch.

Archaeological investigations have revealed evidence of a small settlement surrounding the church, likely a farming community. The village was probably abandoned in the 14th century, possibly due to the Scottish raids or the Black Death, though precise reasons for its desertion are not definitively known.
