George Corrie (priest)

George Corrie (1793-1885) was an English clergyman and academic, serving as Master of Jesus College, Cambridge, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He was a prominent figure in the Church of England during the 19th century.

Born in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland, Corrie was educated at St Paul's School, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was elected a Fellow of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, in 1817 and ordained as a priest in 1822.

His academic career at Cambridge was extensive. He became Senior Tutor of St Catharine's College, and subsequently its President. In 1849, he was appointed Master of Jesus College, a position he held until his death. He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1854 to 1856.

Corrie was known for his contributions to theological scholarship and his involvement in university administration. He was a strong advocate for religious education and played a role in shaping the theological curriculum at Cambridge. His publications include editions of theological works and collections of university sermons. He was also involved in the debates surrounding university reform in the mid-19th century.
