FreeCol
FreeCol is a turn-based strategy game based on the colonization of the Americas. It is a clone of the classic computer game Colonization, originally created by Sid Meier. FreeCol is free and open-source software, licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
The game begins in 1492, with the player controlling a small European expedition sent to explore and colonize the New World. Players must establish colonies, grow crops, manufacture goods, trade with Europe and other colonies, and ultimately declare independence from their mother country. The objective of FreeCol is to either achieve independence or to surpass the European colonizing power in wealth.
Gameplay involves managing resources, building infrastructure, recruiting colonists with various skills, and defending settlements from native populations and other European powers. Diplomacy plays a crucial role, as relationships with both European powers and native tribes can significantly impact the success of a colony.
FreeCol offers a variety of nations to play as, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. These nations often include England, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. The game also includes a scenario editor, allowing players to create custom maps and scenarios.
The game has been under continuous development by a dedicated community of volunteers, and has seen improvements in graphics, gameplay, and AI since its inception. Its availability as free and open-source software has fostered a strong community of players and developers, ensuring its continued evolution.
