Avis Dam

Avis Dam is a dam located approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) east of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. It impounds the Avis River, creating the Avis Dam reservoir. The primary purpose of the dam is to provide a recreational area and contribute to the water supply for Windhoek, although its contribution to the overall water security of the city is relatively small compared to other sources.

The dam is situated within a nature reserve, making it a popular destination for birdwatching, hiking, and picnicking. The Avis Dam Nature Reserve offers opportunities to observe various bird species, including waterfowl and raptors, as well as local flora and fauna.

The reservoir's water level fluctuates significantly depending on rainfall. During periods of drought, the dam may dry up completely, impacting the recreational activities and wildlife dependent on it. When full, it provides a scenic landscape and a valuable resource within the semi-arid environment.

The management of Avis Dam falls under the responsibility of the City of Windhoek. It plays a small role in the city's overall integrated water management strategy which also includes groundwater extraction, reclaimed water, and long-distance pipelines from other sources.
