Fakarava (commune)
Fakarava is a commune of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France. It is located in the Tuamotu archipelago and includes the atolls of Fakarava, Aratika, Kauehi, Niau, Raraka, Taiaro, and Toau. The administrative center of the commune is the village of Rotoava, located on the atoll of Fakarava.
Fakarava Atoll itself is notable for its large lagoon and rich biodiversity, particularly its diverse coral reefs and populations of sharks, rays, and other marine life. The atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognizing its ecological significance.
The economy of the commune is primarily based on tourism, pearl farming, and copra production. The Fakarava Atoll airport provides air access to the region. The population of the commune is spread across the inhabited atolls, with Fakarava being the most populated. The commune falls under the administrative subdivision of the Leeward Islands (Îles du Vent).
