Jon Jory
Jon Jory (born 1938) is an American theatre director, playwright, and educator. He is best known for his long tenure as Artistic Director of Actors Theatre of Louisville (ATL), a position he held from 1969 to 2000. Under his leadership, ATL gained national and international recognition for its commitment to new play development, producing the Humana Festival of New American Plays annually.
Jory significantly impacted American theatre through his championing of new works and playwrights. He established ATL as a leading regional theatre and a vital incubator for new dramatic writing. His innovative programming and directing style helped launch the careers of numerous playwrights and actors.
Following his departure from ATL, Jory served as a Professor of Theatre at the University of Washington. He continues to direct and teach theatre. He has also written several plays himself, including adaptations and original works. His contributions to the American theatre landscape have been widely recognized.
