Empire (EP)

An Extended Play (EP) is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single but is usually unqualified as an album or long play (LP). The term "EP" originally referred to specific types of vinyl records, but it is now applied to mid-length releases in various formats, including compact disc, digital download, and streaming.

The distinction between an EP and an LP is often based on the number of tracks or the total running time. Generally, an EP contains between four and six tracks, or roughly 15 to 30 minutes of music. However, these criteria can vary depending on the artist, record label, and genre. Some EPs may even push these boundaries and approach LP length.

EPs serve various purposes for artists. They can be used to test new sounds, bridge the gap between full-length albums, showcase emerging talent, offer bonus tracks or remixes, or provide a more affordable entry point for new listeners. They can also be a strategic marketing tool.

The historical significance of the EP lies in its affordability and accessibility compared to LPs, particularly during the vinyl era. This allowed artists with limited resources or niche audiences to release music more easily. While digital distribution has altered the economic landscape, the EP remains a viable and popular format for musicians of all levels.
