Unification Day (Cameroon)

Unification Day in Cameroon is a public holiday celebrated annually on May 20th. It commemorates the official creation of the United Republic of Cameroon in 1972.

Prior to 1961, Cameroon was divided into two territories: French Cameroon (administered by France) and British Southern Cameroons (administered by the United Kingdom). In 1961, following plebiscites, British Southern Cameroons joined with French Cameroon. The Federal Republic of Cameroon was established on October 1, 1961, comprising the two formerly separate territories.

On May 20, 1972, a referendum was held proposing a new constitution that would replace the federal system with a unitary state. The referendum passed, and the Federal Republic of Cameroon was replaced by the United Republic of Cameroon. This day, May 20th, is therefore celebrated as Unification Day.

The holiday is marked by parades, cultural performances, and speeches, celebrating the country's unity and cultural diversity. It is a significant day for national pride and reflection on the history and future of Cameroon.
