Alexander Rumyantsev (politician)

Alexander Grigoryevich Rumyantsev (born July 26, 1945) is a Russian politician and diplomat. He served as the Minister of Atomic Energy of Russia from 2001 to 2004.

Rumyantsev graduated from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) in 1969. He began his career at the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, where he worked for many years, eventually becoming its Director. His research focused on nuclear reactor safety and thermonuclear fusion.

In 2001, he was appointed Minister of Atomic Energy, a position he held until the ministry was reorganized in 2004 and replaced by the Federal Agency for Atomic Energy (Rosatom). During his tenure, he oversaw significant developments in Russia's nuclear energy sector, including the construction of new nuclear power plants and the management of nuclear waste. He also addressed issues related to nuclear non-proliferation and international cooperation in the field of atomic energy.

After leaving the Ministry of Atomic Energy, Rumyantsev served as the Russian Ambassador to Finland from 2005 to 2010. He has authored numerous scientific publications and holds several patents. He is considered a leading expert in nuclear energy and related technologies.
