Lithurgus

Lithurgus is a genus of solitary bees in the family Megachilidae, commonly known as leaf-cutting bees. They are distinguished by their slender bodies and their habit of nesting in cavities within wood, often pre-existing beetle borings or similar holes. Unlike many other leaf-cutting bees, Lithurgus females do not cut leaves to line their nests. Instead, they provision their brood cells with pollen and nectar, often collecting pollen primarily from flowers in the family Asteraceae (daisies and sunflowers).

These bees are generally small to medium in size and can be found in various regions around the world, with a greater diversity in warmer climates. The male Lithurgus bees are often observed patrolling near nesting sites, searching for females to mate with. Their life cycle involves a single generation per year (univoltine), with the larvae developing within the nest and overwintering as pupae.

Lithurgus bees play a role in pollination, although their significance varies depending on the local ecosystem and floral composition. Their specialization on Asteraceae pollen can make them important pollinators for these plants in certain areas.
