Ed Austin
Ed Austin (1923-2011) was an American politician and law enforcement figure. He served as the Sheriff of Duval County, Florida from 1969 to 1979 and later as the Mayor of Jacksonville, Florida from 1991 to 1995.
Austin began his career in law enforcement as a patrolman with the Jacksonville Police Department. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming sheriff. As sheriff, he focused on modernizing the department and combating crime.
His tenure as Mayor of Jacksonville was marked by efforts to improve the city's infrastructure and economy. He oversaw projects related to transportation, including road improvements and expansion of Jacksonville International Airport. Austin also focused on attracting new businesses to the city and promoting tourism. He also faced challenges, including managing the city's budget and addressing issues of crime and poverty.
After leaving office, Austin remained active in the Jacksonville community. He was a strong advocate for public safety and economic development.
