City Campus (University of Copenhagen)

The City Campus (Danish: City Campus, formerly Central Campus) is one of the four main campuses of the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is the oldest of the university's campuses and houses the university's administration as well as the Faculties of Theology, Law, Social Sciences, and Humanities.

The campus is located in central Copenhagen, largely concentrated around Frue Plads (Our Lady's Square), and spans a geographical area encompassing numerous buildings of historical and architectural significance. Key buildings within the City Campus include:

  • The Main Building (Frue Plads 4): The primary administrative building of the University of Copenhagen.
  • Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our Lady): While not technically a university building, its proximity and historical ties to the university make it a significant landmark within the campus area. The university's annual graduation ceremony is traditionally held here.
  • The Faculty of Law (Studiegården): Located around Studiegården, this complex houses the Faculty of Law and its associated libraries and facilities.
  • The Faculty of Theology: Spread across several buildings near Frue Plads, this faculty is one of the oldest within the university.
  • The Faculty of Social Sciences: Located in several buildings in the campus, including the Centre for Health and Society (CSS).
  • The Faculty of Humanities (Southern Campus): Previously located within the city campus, many departments of the Faculty of Humanities have relocated to the Southern Campus (South Campus). However, some humanities departments and associated libraries remain within the City Campus.

The City Campus is characterized by its historical buildings, green spaces, and its central location, making it an integral part of Copenhagen's urban landscape. It serves as both a center for academic research and teaching and as an important cultural and historical site within the city. The campus is easily accessible by public transport. It is a dynamic area with a large student population contributing to its atmosphere.
