Mateo Romero (artist)
Mateo Romero (born 1966) is a Native American (Cochiti Pueblo) painter, printmaker, and sculptor. His work blends traditional Pueblo imagery and techniques with contemporary artistic styles, often exploring themes of cultural identity, history, and social commentary. Romero is known for his vibrant colors, bold lines, and incorporation of abstracted figures and geometric patterns. His art frequently references petroglyphs, pottery designs, and other elements of Pueblo artistic heritage. He received a BFA from the University of New Mexico and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Romero's artwork is included in the collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Denver Art Museum, and the Heard Museum. He has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally and is considered a significant figure in contemporary Native American art.
