Eclose

Eclose refers to the act of an insect emerging from its pupal cuticle or from an egg. It is the final molt in the life cycle of insects that undergo metamorphosis. The process typically involves the insect splitting open the pupal case or eggshell using various mechanisms, such as pressure from hemolymph, specialized structures (e.g., hatching spines), or enzymes that weaken the cuticle. Following emergence, the newly eclosed insect often undergoes a period of expansion and hardening of its exoskeleton, a process known as tanning or sclerotization, before becoming fully functional and capable of flight or reproduction. The success of eclosion is crucial for the survival of the insect. Factors such as temperature, humidity, and the presence of physical obstructions can significantly affect the insect's ability to eclose successfully.
