Dubashi

A Dubashi, also spelled Dobhashi, was a bilingual clerk, interpreter, or agent employed during the period of British rule in India. The term originates from the Persian/Hindustani words "do" (two) and "bhashi" (language) literally meaning "one who speaks two languages".

The Dubashi served as an intermediary between European merchants, officials, and local Indian populations. Their primary role was to translate documents and conversations, facilitate trade negotiations, and manage communication between the British East India Company and the Indian community.

Beyond simple translation, Dubashis often held significant power and influence due to their knowledge of both languages and cultures. They could act as brokers, negotiators, and even advisors to the British, wielding considerable economic and political sway. However, this position could also be precarious, as they were often viewed with suspicion by both sides.

The role of the Dubashi was particularly prominent in the early days of the East India Company's expansion. As the British gained greater control and established more formal administrative structures, the reliance on Dubashis gradually diminished. However, their legacy remains significant, highlighting the complex interactions and cultural exchanges that characterized the colonial era in India. They played a crucial role in the development of trade, politics, and social relations during a period of immense transformation.
