Dhanush (howitzer)

The Dhanush is a 155 mm towed howitzer developed for the Indian Army by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), now known as Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL). It is based on the Swedish Bofors FH77B howitzer, which India acquired in the 1980s. The Dhanush incorporates several upgrades and improvements over the original design, including an indigenous inertial navigation system, a muzzle brake, and an improved fire control system. These enhancements are aimed at increasing accuracy, range, and operational efficiency.

The howitzer is designed to be capable of firing a variety of 155 mm ammunition, including high-explosive, extended-range, and cluster munitions. It has a range of up to 38 kilometers, depending on the type of ammunition used.

The development of the Dhanush was initiated as part of India's efforts to indigenize its defense production and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. Extensive trials were conducted before the howitzer was inducted into service with the Indian Army. The Dhanush is seen as a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in artillery systems.
