Demise

Demise refers to the end of something, often used to describe the death of a person, but also applicable to the termination or failure of an institution, idea, practice, or other abstract entity.

Etymology:

The word "demise" comes from the Old French word desmettre, meaning "to put aside" or "to dismiss." This, in turn, derives from the Latin dimittere, meaning "to send away, dismiss, let go." The evolution of the word's meaning has shifted from a simple dismissal or relinquishment to encompass a more complete and final termination.

Usage:

While "demise" can technically be used to describe any ending, it often carries a connotation of significance or consequence. It is more likely to be used to describe the end of something that was once important, powerful, or widespread.
