Lokrum

Lokrum is a small island located in the Adriatic Sea, approximately 600 meters off the coast of Dubrovnik, Croatia. It is known for its natural beauty, including pine forests, rocky beaches, and a saltwater lake known as the "Dead Sea."

The island has a rich history, dating back to the Benedictine monks who founded an abbey there in 1023. Legend has it that Richard the Lionheart was shipwrecked near Lokrum in 1192 and, in gratitude for his survival, decided to build a church on the island (though it was eventually built in Dubrovnik instead). The Benedictine monastery remained active until it was abandoned in 1808.

In the 19th century, Lokrum was acquired by Maximilian Ferdinand of Habsburg, brother of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. Maximilian built a luxurious summer residence on the island, including botanical gardens, which are still a major attraction today. A notable feature of the gardens is the collection of peacocks, which roam freely around the island.

Today, Lokrum is a protected nature reserve. It is accessible by boat from Dubrovnik's Old Town. Swimming is popular, particularly in the Dead Sea lake. The island is also known for its nude beaches. A permanent exhibition dedicated to the popular television series Game of Thrones, which filmed some scenes on Lokrum, can also be found on the island. Visitors are prohibited from staying overnight on Lokrum.
