David Howell (priest)

David Howell (1735-1813) was a Welsh Anglican priest, known for his evangelical preaching and influence within the Church in Wales during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Llangan, Glamorgan, he was educated at Cowbridge Grammar School and Jesus College, Oxford.

Howell was ordained a priest in 1758 and served as curate and later vicar in several parishes in Glamorgan, including Llangan, where he established a significant following. He was a prominent figure in the Welsh Methodist revival, although he remained within the Church of England throughout his life. His preaching style was passionate and direct, emphasizing personal conversion and the importance of living a holy life.

Howell was a close associate of other evangelical clergy, such as Daniel Rowland and Howell Harris, and he played a key role in spreading evangelicalism throughout South Wales. He was also known for his charitable works and his efforts to improve the spiritual and material welfare of his parishioners. His influence extended beyond his own parishes, and he was widely respected as a leader of the evangelical movement in Wales.

Howell's published works include sermons and devotional writings. He died in 1813 and is remembered as one of the most influential figures in the history of the Welsh Church.
