Cyclone Xavier (2006)

Cyclone Xavier was a relatively weak tropical cyclone that affected Western Australia in March 2006. It formed from a tropical low in the Timor Sea and tracked generally southward, making landfall near Port Hedland as a Category 1 cyclone on the Australian cyclone scale.

Xavier brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to the Pilbara region. Coastal areas experienced minor flooding and some damage to infrastructure. The most significant impact was felt in inland areas due to rainfall, causing localised flooding and disruption to mining operations. While impacting mining operations, the overall economic impact of Cyclone Xavier was considered relatively minor. No fatalities were reported as a direct result of the cyclone.

Meteorological agencies monitored the system closely, issuing warnings to residents in the affected areas. Post-storm assessments focused on infrastructure damage and the overall effectiveness of the warning systems in place. While not a particularly powerful cyclone, Xavier served as a reminder of the vulnerability of coastal communities and mining operations to tropical cyclones in Western Australia. The name "Xavier" was not retired following the cyclone.
