Ctenopoma

Ctenopoma is a genus of freshwater fish belonging to the family Anabantidae, commonly known as bushfish. These fish are native to Africa, primarily found in the Congo River Basin, West Africa, and parts of Southern Africa.

Ctenopoma species are characterized by their laterally compressed bodies, cryptic coloration, and ability to breathe atmospheric air using a labyrinth organ, which allows them to survive in oxygen-poor environments. They are ambush predators, often remaining still amongst vegetation or submerged structures to stalk their prey, which typically consists of small fish, insects, and crustaceans.

Bushfish exhibit a range of sizes depending on the species, with some reaching up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) in length. Their coloration varies widely, often exhibiting mottled patterns of browns, greens, and blacks, providing excellent camouflage in their natural habitats.

Several Ctenopoma species are popular in the aquarium trade, valued for their interesting behavior and relatively peaceful nature when kept with similarly sized tankmates. Common examples include the Leopard Ctenopoma (Ctenopoma acutirostre) and the Spotted Ctenopoma (Ctenopoma maculatum). They generally require well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding places to thrive.

The genus Ctenopoma plays an important role in the African freshwater ecosystems, contributing to the balance of predator-prey relationships. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting their natural habitats from degradation and overfishing.
