Clear (Scientology)
In Scientology, "Clear" refers to a specific state of being achieved through auditing (a form of spiritual counseling). It represents a major milestone on the "Bridge to Total Freedom," the path of spiritual advancement within Scientology.
A Clear is defined as a person who no longer has his own reactive mind, which is described as an unconscious and irrational part of the mind that stores engrams (mental image pictures associated with pain and unconsciousness). These engrams are believed to cause unwanted emotions, behaviors, and even physical ailments.
The process of becoming Clear involves intensive auditing, where a Scientologist, with the guidance of an auditor, revisits and confronts past painful experiences to discharge the emotional charge associated with them. This is done using an E-meter, an electronic device that Scientologists believe can detect changes in mental state and indicate areas where engrams are present.
Once a person is declared Clear, they are believed to have a greatly enhanced level of mental clarity, intelligence, and overall well-being. They are no longer subject to the negative influences of their reactive mind and are considered to be more rational and capable. The state of Clear is a prerequisite for further advancement within Scientology, leading to higher levels of spiritual awareness known as Operating Thetan (OT) levels.
