Circus (magazine)

Circus was an American monthly rock music magazine published from 1969 to 2006. Initially focusing on a broad range of popular music, including pop and bubblegum, it evolved to concentrate almost exclusively on hard rock and heavy metal by the late 1970s. It was known for its large, glossy photographs, comprehensive concert reviews, and its focus on the visual aspects of the rock and metal scene.

The magazine was founded by Gerard Rothberg and originally published by Sterling's Magazines. Over the years, ownership shifted, with various publishing houses taking the helm. While it initially competed with other rock magazines like Rolling Stone and Creem, Circus differentiated itself through its emphasis on visuals and a more fan-oriented approach.

Circus often featured interviews with prominent musicians, album reviews, and news about the music industry. Its large format allowed for striking photographs of live performances and band portraits, making it popular with younger rock fans. In its later years, the magazine struggled to maintain relevance in a rapidly changing media landscape and eventually ceased publication in 2006. Despite its closure, Circus remains a significant part of rock music journalism history, documenting a crucial period in the development of hard rock and heavy metal.
