Church of São Francisco (Porto)

The Church of São Francisco (Igreja de São Francisco) is a prominent Roman Catholic church located in Porto, Portugal. It stands as one of the city's most important examples of Gothic architecture, although its interior is lavishly decorated in Baroque style.

Construction of the church began in the 14th century under the patronage of the Franciscan Order and was completed around 1425. The original Gothic design is still evident in the church's exterior, particularly in its rose window and façade.

The interior, however, underwent significant transformation in the 17th and 18th centuries. A massive Baroque ornamentation project resulted in the extensive use of gilded carvings (talha dourada), covering nearly every surface of the interior. This elaborate gold-leaf decoration is considered one of the most remarkable examples of Baroque art in Portugal.

Key features inside include the Tree of Jesse sculpture, a complex genealogical representation of Jesus Christ, and the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, designed by the Italian artists. The church also houses catacombs underneath, which can be visited.

The Church of São Francisco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized as part of the Historic Centre of Porto. It is a popular tourist destination, appreciated for its historical significance and contrasting architectural styles.
